Avnet Names William Amelio as its New CEO

Avnet, Inc. has appointed Bill Amelio as its permanent Chief Executive Officer, after functioning as the company’s interim CEO since mid July.

“Avnet is fortunate to have someone of Bill’s character and experience,” said Board Chairman William Schumann. “He brings energy and focus to the business, and the board unanimously agreed that making him the permanent CEO was in the best interest of our customers, employees and shareholders.”

With 35 years of management and industry experience to his credit, Amelio was the president, chief executive officer and a director of CHC Group Ltd., an international oil-field services company, from 2010 to 2015. From 2005 to 2009, he served as president and chief executive officer of Lenovo, a multinational Fortune 500 technology company, and was previously a regional senior vice president and president, Asia-Pacific and Japan for Dell Inc. He began his career with the Microelectronics Technology Division of IBM in 1979 and later became the General Manager Worldwide Operations of the Personal Computer Division.

Strong IT Job Growth in August

An additional 205,000 IT professionals reported employment during August, according to research conducted by CompTIA, a non-profit industry trade association based in the Chicago suburbs. . That brings the total base of core IT occupation employment to more than 4.6 million, according to the organization.

Employment in computer systems design and IT software and services experienced another strong month in August, with 6,100 jobs added. Other information services, including search portals, added 1,100 jobs in August. The data processing, hosting and related services category saw a gain of 900 jobs last month.

Offsetting those gains were August job losses in telecommunications (down 2,600) and computer and electronic products manufacturing (down 700).

The data is based on analysis of data and projections from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

FireMon Names New Vice President of Worldwide Channels

FireMon, an Overland Park, KS-based security vendor, has named Kurt Mills as the company’s new vice president of worldwide channels.

Mills joins FireMon after leading worldwide channel sales and operations for Blue Coat Systems. During his time, he integrated two cloud acquisitions and developed the channel distribution strategy. Previously, he held channel leadership positions at Aerohive Networks and McAfee.

“Kurt has an incredible track record leading the channel and growing partnerships around the world,” said Pete Kobs, Chief Revenue Officer, FireMon. “We look forward to utilizing his experience in the industry to expand on our global approach to our channel programs and capitalize on the market need for reducing the complexity associated with security of networked environments.”
