Gartner: Nearly Half of Enterprise Apps Will Soon Feature Task-Specific AI Agents

Forty percent of enterprise applications will be integrated with task-specific AI agents by 2026, up from less than 5% today, according to Gartner Inc. Meanwhile, as organizations accelerate digital transformation, agentic AI in enterprise applications will move beyond individual productivity, setting new standards for teamwork and workflow through smarter human-agent interactions.

Gartner forecasts agentic AI will drive approximately 30% of enterprise application software revenue by 2035, surpassing $450 billion, up from 2% in 2025.

“AI agents are evolving rapidly, progressing from basic assistants embedded in enterprise applications today to task-specific agents by 2026 and ultimately multiagent ecosystems by 2029,” said Anushree Verma, Sr Director Analyst at Gartner. “This shift transforms enterprise applications from tools supporting individual productivity into platforms enabling seamless autonomous collaboration and dynamic workflow orchestration.”

AI assistants are the precursor to agentic AI. They simplify tasks and interactions for users but depend on human input and do not operate independently. The most common misconception is referring to these AI assistants as agents, a misunderstanding fueled by widespread “agentwashing.”

“As AI agents begin acting independently and handle tasks ranging from routine development to complex incident response without human involvement, leaders must ensure strong security and governance,” added Verma.

Collaboration among AI agents will redefine enterprise applications as organizations move beyond single-purpose automation. By 2027, Gartner predicts one-third of agentic AI implementations will combine agents with different skills to manage complex tasks within application and data environments. By 2028, AI agent ecosystems are expected to enable networks of specialized agents to dynamically collaborate across multiple applications, allowing users to achieve goals without interacting with each application individually.

This shift will drive the need for new business models, greater transparency, dynamic pricing and increased governance to ensure ethical agentic AI operations.

Gartner estimates that by 2028, a third of user experiences will shift from native applications to agentic front ends, requiring new business models to avoid disintermediation.

Okta to Acquire Axiom Security

Okta has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Axiom Security, an identity-centric Privileged Access Management (PAM) solution built for cloud, SaaS, and database environments.

Axiom’s technology will be integrated into “Okta Privileged Access,” expanding access controls to more sensitive resources that Okta customers can use to further strengthen their identity security fabric, so they can manage the types of privileged access across resources and use cases in their environment. The platform currently provides unified access and governance for privileged resources, whether on-prem or in the cloud, increasing visibility and compliance. It is designed to streamline access to servers and non-federated accounts, providing a secure vault that integrates with governance workflows to help ensure accountability.

Founded by Itay Mesika and Ilan Dardik in Tel Aviv, Israel, Axiom Security delivers a cloud-native, identity-centric PAM platform that helps organizations eliminate standing privileges and secure access to critical infrastructure with Just-in-Time (JIT) access, automated request and approval workflows, and user access reviews.

“Axiom Security elevates our current PAM product to solve for even more use cases, adding security controls and connectors to critical infrastructure resources, such as databases and Kubernetes,” said Abhi Sawant, Chief Technology Officer at Okta.

In the future, the platform will incorporate key Axiom functionality to deliver a single point of administration for privileged Just-in-Time access, AI-based application connector builder capabilities, and enhanced security for Kubernetes and databases, ensuring least-privileged access and full traceability for auditing and compliance.

Okta Privileged Access will continue to be Okta’s PAM solution, and is available globally, except in compliance cells, like HIPAA and FedRAMP.

Channel Impact®
As more enterprises bring AI into their workforce, privileged access controls are a key defense layer to properly mitigate AI-related risks. This acquisition is intended to help customers extend their identity security fabric to more privileged accounts and resources, ensuring a single control plane for managing privileged access, whether on-prem or in the cloud.
